Community, health, education & environment through gardening

Picture
Lennox Community Gardens was founded in 2015 by a group of local volunteers interested in promoting the principles of:
Community spirit
  • Provide food security and ongoing access to affordable organic food for members
  • Provide a hub for people to meet and get to know their community
  • Offer a central outdoor setting for community events
Good health
  • Provide access to a diverse range of fresh, nutrient-dense food
  • Provide opportunities for exercise and staying active
  • Promote calm and an increased sense of wellbeing
  • Reduce exposure to chemical fertilizers and pesticides
Sharing of knowledge
  • Reconnect individuals with the source of their food
  • Encourage sharing of knowledge
  • Demonstrate effective organic waste management techniques (e.g. worm farms, composting)
Environmental sustainability
  • Reduce food miles associated with transporting food
  • Provide habitat for wildlife
  • Enhance biodiversity
  • Encourage bees and other pollinators
  • Reduce soil erosion and run-off
The gardens occupy 3,000m² within Ocean Breeze Reserve and feature nearly a 100 mainly exotic fruit trees (eg. Jackfruit, Sapote, Peanut Butter Fruit, African Peach, Sapodilla) making it unlike any other project undertaken in the Ballina Shire.

The community and visitors are encouraged to wander through and enjoy the gardens. Herbs at the entrance are available for everyone to share.

Members communally maintain the
orchards and vegetable plots and benefit from the organic fruit and vegetables they harvest .

Excess produce when available is put in the Community Sharing Hut for the community and visitors to share.

If you would like to join us as a member please follow the Join or Donate link above or come along to one of our working bees to learn more about the Gardens.
