Brazilian Cherry
Eugenia uniflora
Myrtaceae family

A highly ornamental shrub with aromatic foliage. Delicate white flowers are followed within 3 weeks by a ribbed fruit that changes from green to orange to maroon-red when fully ripe.  Related to Guava, Mountain Apple and Jaboticaba.

The fruit is delicious eaten out-of-hand, use in jam, jelly, cheesecake, pastries, sauce and pies, or add to ice cream, fruit salad or juices, or create cherry wine, or cough syrup.  Refrigeration enhances the flavour.

Rich in vitamin A, C and minerals, they have the ability to keep your immune system strong and healthy.

It is native to eastern South America, extending from Suriname down to southern Brazil and Uruguay.

Tree maintenance
  • Pruning - to encourage new growth prune branch tips at the end of summer; keep to a neat screening bush (however, if pruned, fruit production will be much less than if left unpruned).
  • Fertilise, at the same time as watering, with a slow release organic fertiliser (8-3-9) once a year during the growing season.
  • The tree has a deep root system and can handle drought, but prefers some irrigation.
