Butter Sapote
Pouteria Butyrocarpa
Sapotaceae family

Not a lot of information is available on the Butter Sapote, so we will need to learn as it matures.  Our tree suffers dieback regularly but continues to bounce back.  It will be a long slow process to bring to maturity, if we are able to.  It is related to the Canistel, which is also grown at Lennox Community Gardens.

The round fruit has a yellow and brown mottled skin.

It is endemic to Brazil, and is threatened by habitat loss.

Tree Provenance
This tree was donated by a rare fruit tree collector named Gabriel Anthony.  Gabe grew many trees in pots, west of Byron Bay, and we were very lucky to receive several rare and special trees that were already on their way to maturity.

Tree Maintenance
Pruning
  • When mature, prune immediately after fruit set, selectively to size as needed to bring down to picking height.
Fertiliser
  • Spring: compost around drip line, poultry manure.
  • Summer: liquid seaweed.
  • Autumn: compost around drip line.
  • Keep soil well mulched, leaving a gap around the trunk to avoid collar rot.
