Jaboticaba 'Blue'
Myrciaria vexator
Myrtaceae Family

A slow-growing evergreen tree that can grow up to 10m tall.  It is an exquisite landscape specimen that bears delicious grape-like fruit.  The species is obscure and only available from specialised sources.

The fruit can be harvested when fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch.

Native to Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela.

Tree Maintenance
Pruning
  • Prune to size as needed - keep to about 2.5m height.
Watering
  • Once established, water deeply during dry periods.  Younger trees should not be allowed to dry out.  Will handle flooding conditions well.
Fertiliser
  • Spring (early): compost around drip line, rock mineral (crusher dust).
  • Summer: liquid seaweed, compost around drip line.
  • Jaboticabas are acid-loving; do not apply alkaline soil amendments such as lime.
  • Jaboticabas are sensitive to fertiliser: too much will result in leaf tip burn.
