Jackfruit 'Rajang'
Artocarpus heterophyllus
Moraceae family
Grafted
Rajang is an excellent eating Jackfruit, crisp with a taste like the smell of juicy fruit chewing gum - a mix of apples, pineapple, mango and banana.
David Chandlee (at Tully) introduced it as a seedling back in the 80’s. He found it on the Rajang river in Borneo; it looks different to most Jackfruit, the tree upright, the leaves small.
The word Jackfruit comes from the Portuguese jaca, which in turn is derived from the Malaysian term chakra (a group of green fruits joined together).
A mature (when it has a pungent smell) fruit should become soft-ripe from 5-7 days after picking.
Jackfruit is thought to have originated in southwest India, but has naturalised in Malaysia, southeast Asia and east Africa over centuries of human movement in the tropics.

Tree maintenance
- Prune only in the warmer months - remove dead wood, and control the height of the tree, preferably to 3-5m.
- Fertilise twice yearly in the spring and winter with a slow-release granular organic fertiliser; mixing compost annually into the soil around the tree can also be beneficial.
- Jackfruit trees like consistently moist soil year-round - water whenever the soil begins to dry out.
- Can aid fertilisation by rubbing a female fruit against a male.
