Bunchosia argentea
Grown from seedling
Blooms with clusters of bright yellow flowers, which produce olive-sized oval fruits that ripen to a deep, glossy orange-red.
The fruit has a dense, sweet flesh that has a texture similar to peanut butter or sweet potato, and is best eaten straight off the tree as soon as it turns deep red and soft, but you will have to be quick to beat the birds! Fruit can be picked light orange and bench ripened.
Ideal for jams, jellies, preserves, muffins and the like.
Especially good when blended into a milkshake.
The flesh can also be dehydrated, or frozen.
Protein rich, low in calories and fat, and are a source of simple sugars, fibre and vitamins.
Native to South America.
Tree maintenance
Pruning - after training when young, pruning is restricted to removal of dead and crossing branches.
Prefers rich moist soil - apply a well balanced organic slow release fertiliser three times a year.
Loves water - ensure moist soil conditions.
